コローは晩年になって女性の人物画を描くようになった。風景画家と言われているコローだが、人物画にこそ揺るぎない作品を残している。この絵はコロー自身がモナ・リザを強く意識して描いたと言われている。「真珠の女」は木の葉を真珠代わりに着けており、決して真珠を身につけていない。バルビゾンのモナ・リザだ。モナ・リザは神秘的な微笑をたたえているが、コローの描いたモナ・リザはとても優しく温かい。そこにはレオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチのモナ・リザよりもずっと生き生きとした人間的な血が流れている。庶民的な雰囲気の漂うこの肖像画は、ベルト・ゴールドシュミットという近所の織物商の娘さんをモデルに描かれている。健康的で庶民的な娘は、気前良く胸のボタンを開けている。コローはこの娘さんに、若き日に画家としての修行をしたイタリアから持ち帰った古風な民族衣装をわざわざ着せている。そこには画家のイタリアへの深い思慕を感じさせる。美しい階調の煙るような画風のコローであるが、人物画の方はむしろ若い頃の風景画のようにはっきりとした輪郭で、ざっくりと描かれている。コローはこの絵を生涯手元に置いて自宅の居間に飾っていたというが、そこには自らの画家の人生に対する満足と、画業に対する揺るぎない自信を感じることができる。
コローは恵まれた家庭に生まれ、理解ある両親のもとで画家になった。コローの生涯には劇的な所は何もない。絵にも人生にも育ちの良さが現れている。コローは大家になってからも質素な暮らしを続け、その収入の多くを恵まれない画家たちのために使ったという。ひどく人の良いコローは、多くの人に親しまれ、安らかな死を迎えたという。「真珠の女」はコローの願いが届いたのか、現在は本家の「モナ・リザ」と一緒にルーブル美術館に収められている。コローの画家としての生涯は、私の人生の指針でもある。

In his later years, Corot began to paint female figures. Although Corot is known as a landscape painter, it is in his figure paintings that he left indelible works. It is said that Corot was strongly mindful of the Mona Lisa when painting this picture. The “Woman with Pearls” is adorned with leaves in place of pearls, never wearing actual pearls. She is the Mona Lisa of Barbizon. While the Mona Lisa possesses a mystical smile, Corot’s Mona Lisa is very gentle and warm. There flows a much more vivid and human lifeblood than in Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. This portrait, with its common folk atmosphere, depicts a young lady named Berthe Goldschmidt, the daughter of a local textile merchant. The healthy and commoner girl generously opens the buttons at her chest. Corot has deliberately dressed this young lady in an old-fashioned national costume that he brought back from Italy, where he had trained as a young artist. This conveys the artist’s deep longing for Italy. Corot, known for his beautiful, smoky tonal painting style, has instead depicted the figure with clear contours and in a rough manner, much like his early landscape paintings. Corot kept this painting in his living room throughout his life, which reflects his satisfaction with his life as an artist and his unwavering confidence in his work.
Corot was born into a privileged family and became a painter with the understanding of his parents. There was nothing dramatic in Corot’s life. Both his paintings and his life reflect his good upbringing. Even after becoming a master, Corot continued to live modestly, spending much of his income on less fortunate painters. The extremely kind-hearted Corot was beloved by many and is said to have died a peaceful death. Perhaps Corot’s wish was fulfilled, as “The Woman with Pearls” is now housed in the Louvre Museum alongside the original “Mona Lisa.” Corot’s life as a painter also serves as a guiding principle for my own life.
